Accreditation decisions are granted to each specialty within the applicant counseling program. For example, the CACREP Board could confer accreditation on an institution’s counseling program specialty in School Counseling for eight years, its specialty in Clinical Mental Health Counseling for two-years, and could deny accreditation of the specialty in Addiction Counseling. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) developed a number of standards and accreditation-related documents that allowed them to conduct voluntary accreditation of counseling programs.
